ARIANNA Power Station
The IDL is responsible for re-building ARIANNA (pdf) turbines for the cold environment on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Two such turbines, together with PV panels, are shown in the field.
Each turbine had to be dis-assembled. The bearings were removed from the power shaft and the yaw assembly. The grease was removed from each bearing and replaced with low-temperature grease.
Finally, the generator head was tested on a motor-driven stand and then shipped to Antarctica.
