ARA Renewable-Energy Power System

Four Prototype Power Stations

AARPS (Antarctic ARA Renewable-Energy Power System) encompasses four prototype power stations for the Askar'yan Radio Array (ARA) at the South Pole.

The station shown at the upper left has a small wind turbine for year round power generation, and a 320W photovoltaic panel for generation during the austral summer.

In the lower-left photo, a station has a Bergey XL.1 kW turbine on a 20m tower.  Meteorology stations are mounted at 3 heights for a study of wind profiles, which are affected by the surface characteristics of the wind-blown terrain.

Another turbine at the upper right, is a test of a Raum turbine which has since been replaced.
